While working on my Family Tree yesterday, I decided to pursue some of the lesser known ancestors. A line I was looking at lead me to The Netherlands. The Netherlands. Granted it is a remote line and the ancestors left there in 1600 something for Staten Island, NY but really, The Netherlands. I was surprised and so the first thing I did was google The Netherlands. Then I quickly glanced through Wiki. Then I looked at maps. I have to admit, I had a general idea of where  I thought this country was but I was surprised again. It was not where I expected it to be. I think I was surprised at how ignorant I was about The Netherlands. So, I learned something new yesterday.

I got to thinking, why did my ancestors leave there in 1600 something. What was going on there. This will be my project for today. The history of The Netherlands circa 1600-1700.

I have now uncovered two direct lines to Scotland, my father and mother’s family. I have found two indirect lines to Scotland through wives of great great grandfathers. I have found two indirect lines to England also the same way. I have to say, this is all amazingly consistent with what I have found in my DNA results.

This genealogy stuff is fascinating. For me, anyway. I know here in America, most of us are a mix of so many ethnicities. We all come from somewhere. I think about this and I realize my ancestry comes through Scotland, England, Canada and Now, The Netherlands. What will I find next?

Hello. I am the author of the Historical Fiction novel called Mamie Garrison. It is a tale of slavery, abolition, romance and history, set in the years just prior to the Civil War. Their story includes romance and paranormal aspects. Mamie's story follows her adventures as an abolitionist through her journals. There are some mysteries as well as an unusual background in Mamie's life. I have completed book two in my series. Colin Garrison, Book 2 of The Garrisons is available at Please see my Colin Garrison page under the menu option for a small sample of this new book. The third and final book in the series, Emily Garrison is now available. Please see above for link. I am 62 with one adult child and one grandchild. I have always enjoyed the written word and have been a voracious reader from my early youth. I am inspired by many authors in the historical fiction genre. I am also a lover of Russian literature, particularly Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. I find great inspiration for creating characters by looking at the ones these two authors have created. There is such a depth to them. I have written for most of my life in one form or another. I have dabbled in poetry and songwriting, and have more started novels than finished ones. In my free time, I like reading, history and travel. I am interested in genealogy and working on my family tree. I live in St Louis.
