My goal, or at least one of them, in writing the books I do, is precisely this. I want to invade your comfort zone.
I want you to love the characters and the writing style, but I also want you to learn about a time and a people you may know little about.
This is why I write about African-American history. There is so much I never learned. I imagine it is the same for many of you. I can go on at length on this subject, and I may at some other time. For now, this is enough.
In all reading, I think, there is something that can be learned. It may be just a small thing, like how to create a beautiful sentence, or use a certain word. It doesn’t have to be life-changing.
Look for what a book can tell you, that you might not know. Look for what a book can teach you. You won’t be sorry.
