My name is Mamie McRae Garrison. It is 1920, and I am 90 years old. My memory is just as sharp as it was 70 years ago. I am writing down my childhood recollections as best as can be remembered because it has been requested of me to share the journals I kept from 1850 to 1861. I have showed the notes kept during those eleven years prior to the Civil War to a visitor, a Miss Alice Simpson, who said she was collecting stories about the Underground Railroad, and had heard about my involvement. She told me that if I would donate them to a project she is working on, they will be a gift for future generations. I’m not entirely sure that what I’ve been told about my story being a gift is true, but have been assured that others will want to know who I am or rather who I was and what my life was like for a brief period of time from 1830 to 1861. I say 1830 because I insisted that if I was to make my journals public, they must start at the beginning and tell the whole story. No one can know me or understand my actions without knowing the beginning. All of it is what they need to know, not just about what this country was like when I was young, but what many of us did to help change the course of history and why. It is not to bring praise unto myself, I want to be clear about that, but to show what can be accomplished when one sets aside one’s own needs and rises above themselves to help the less fortunate. This is a portion of my life story, the first thirty-one years. It is only one woman’s story, but at this late stage of my life, I have chosen to recount this specific time in detail, and so will begin. It is hoped my memories may be found useful.
Keep up the God work–Mom and Red

Wonderful story. Teresa, how much is true? It’s funny, my mom’s sister is Geraldine (Jeri), and she once worked for the Garrison’s as a bookkeeper/Secretary in their plumbing business, when I was growing up. We all lived in Bloomington Illinois at that time.

It’s all fiction. Some of the names were taken from ancestors but that’s it. Glad you liked it.

Teresa, your fascination with history and genealogy intrigues me. I too am a genealogist and family historian for the African American McRae’s. I have written a book on the subject and recognize that the McRae’s have their start in American in N.C. and eventually down into Georgia where my family hails from. Thank you for such an exceptional book. I would be interested to know if you are familiar with any of your family history and stories that may help my research.

I do know that my McRaes came from Scotland to North Catolina around the late 1700s. My first ancestor born here was Colin McRae in 1810. I have a rather extensive tree on Ancestry. My McRae line goes back to Christopher MacRae, Constable of Eileen Donan Cadtle in the 1500s. Mt late uncle, Lee and I did extensive DNA testing with Martin Halligan. He heads a McRae DNA project out of England that covers the UK and America as well as other counties. He has quite a bit of info that might be interesting to you. If you google his name you should be able to find his email.m
Thanks for the nice comment about my book. Teresa

Ms Mcrae, thank you so very much for a wonderful book. I am 66 yrs old, I graduated from college in 2015. During my years in college I renewed my love for History, I took every history class I could.
Your book really continues to quench my desire for more historical fiction.
I was raised in a former slave home on a what was a tobacco farm. The families of the former slaves lived not far away on what was the original plantation. The Smithsonian Institution now owns that entire farm/plantation. I attended high school with most of the grandchildren and some great grandchildren of the families of the former slaves. This I is where my love and passion for History drives me to any form of
research and historical books I am can put my hands on.
Sorry this is so long, if at anytime you would like any information, feel free to contact me.
Keep the great books coming.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I am so glad you liked my book. What a fascinating history you have. Thanks for sharing it with me. I don’t know if you’ve read book 2 of my series, but if not, I think you might enjoy that as well. Also on Amazon for .99. It is titled Colin Garrison.
I am fascinated by the fact that you lived in a former slave house. Does the Plantation’s home still exist. If you have pics, I would love to see them. I often use pictures for inspiration. Where is the plantation located?
Again, thank you for your kind words.
